When we became parents over 20 years ago, we were shocked by the synthetic materials we found inside cot mattresses.
So we set out to create the first completely natural, chemical-free baby mattress. Naturalmat Baby was born, and since then we’ve helped thousands of babies (and parents!) sleep better and healthier.
Where it all began.
A long time ago a nautical idea sparked between Naturalmat founders Mark & Peter. They noticed that the average boat mattress was made of cheap, synthetic slabs of polyurethane foam – truly horrible stuff which retained heat & moisture and made for a hot and uncomfortable night’s sleep.
They quickly discovered that the solution was to use natural materials. Inherently breathable, natural fibres wick heat and moisture away from the body and create a far healthier, more comfortable and longer lasting mattress.
A year later Mark and his wife Alice were expecting their first child, Luke, who went on to become our first product tester (and model!). They looked into nursery mattresses and found that they too were made entirely from man-made synthetic fibres with nasty plastic covers. Surely babies deserved a nice natural sleeping environment too? So Mark & Peter set to work and within six months launched the first nursery mattress to pass all British standards with no plastics, synthetics, glues or chemical fire retardants. Just 100% natural, the way it should be.
“Our mission is to help people sleep in a healthier and more sustainable way.”

Our first home.
Naturalmat Baby's early years were spent in London's famous Notting Hill. Whilst founder Mark travelled between Devon and the capital, hand making each mattress on an old table tennis table in his parent's boatyard, we launched ourselves onto the world from this little corner of West London.
Twenty years later we are still there, and our Nursery Showroom is open 6 days a week to provide you with everything you need to give your little one an entirely natural sleep environment.
Made by hand in Devon.
At Naturalmat, we believe that people, not machines, make a superior, long-lasting product.
Our team of craftspeople ensure every stitch, fibre, tufting button and cover is painstakingly created, teased and checked - all under one roof in our Topsham workshop.
That’s why we are proud to stamp ‘Made by hand in Devon’ on everything we make.
Sustainable since day one.
Whilst the rest of the industry scrambles to jump on the sustainability bandwagon, we’ve had a planet-friendly approach from day one.
Our beds and mattresses are all made by us in the UK, in our solar-powered workshop, from materials that are biodegradable or recyclable.
You’ll find no plastics, VOCs or any other chemicals in our products whatsoever. Better for you, better for the planet.
