A beautifully upholstered first bed designed to grow with your child.
The Gulliver Bed is a low, thoughtfully crafted base with charming wooden bun feet, created to help your child transition from their cot to their first bed. With its toddler-friendly height, it encourages independence and supports motor development, helping adventurous children explore their new found freedom safely and confidently.
Designed for comfort and connection, the Gulliver is just as inviting for bedtime stories as it is for morning cuddles. Its low design makes co-sleeping simple, allowing parents to slip away easily during the night, and providing a supportive space for nighttime nursing or quiet comfort.
The Gulliver Bed is handcrafted in our Devon workshop and upholstered using organic coir and organic wool for natural comfort and breathability—no synthetics or harmful chemicals, making for a healthier and more sustainable night’s sleep.
Handcrafted with a 10cm deep upholstered base fitted with unvarnished beech bun feet so it hovers close to the ground, this slightly elevated frame allows air to circulate naturally, creating a healthier sleep environment. As your child grows, you can choose to replace the bun feet with taller 155mm beech legs — giving it longevity as it becomes a standard height Single bed, travelling with your child for years to come.
Floor beds like the Gulliver offer more than just a place to rest. They create a flexible, nurturing space that adapts to your family’s needs, whether it’s solely for your little one or big enough to be shared.

Safety
Every child is different. As a parent, you know your child best. If you feel comfortable and confident in making the switch to a floor bed, it's likely the right time. Trust your instincts and prioritize your child's safety and well-being. 2 years old would be a great time to transition a young toddler to the Gulliver Bed. It is around this time that a child transitions out of a cot into a toddler bed. However, the right time will vary child to child. Once they show signs of mobility and outgrow the cot, which can be from 1 year.
Low beds reduce the risk of falls. An additional bedrail can provide extra safety and guidance whilst they gain confidence in their new space.
Health advisors encourage room sharing until the infant is at least 6 months old.
A room should be set up safely for a floor bed, securing heavy furniture to the walls, leaving no blind cords or wires accessible to your infant, making sure all power sockets are covered, removing any choking hazards, and making sure you use the correct firm child mattress.
Very few beds are built the way we build them
Handmade in Devon, properly
We handcraft our beds in our Devon workshop using traditional joinery techniques which ensure they last a lifetime. Unlike most bed frames which are simply stapled together, ours are glued (using a non-toxic glue) and screwed for a much sturdier and longer lasting construction. And because we make everything ourselves, we’re always happy to accommodate bespoke requests like making headboards taller or wider, or swapping the standard feet for something different.

The natural difference
Many of the same natural and organic fibres in our mattresses feature in our beds too. We start with FSC-certified timber (FSC® C185003) for the frame and layer on organic coir or recycled denim depending on the design. The headboard is then wrapped in locally sourced organic wool before being finished with one of our natural fabrics. The result is a natural bed, completely free of synthetic foam and chemical fire retardants, which will provide years of comfort.

Our fabrics
We have curated a collection of natural fabrics, featuring unique fibres like linen, wool and hemp, chosen not only for their look & feel, but also for the ethos & sustainability credentials of the mill itself. Using the fabric selector at the top of the page, you can order up to 5 free swatches which should arrive within a week.
A bed for life
Many beds today are flimsily put together and not made to last. As a result, millions end up in landfill every year – a terrible reality that never sat right with us. At Naturalmat, we do things differently. Not only are our beds properly made and built to last, but when the time comes to replace or refresh them, our Bed for Life Initiative™ gives you three sustainable options:
