We are immensely proud to have been honoured with the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainability, marking the latest milestone in our longstanding mission to create the healthiest, most sustainable natural beds, mattresses and bedding.
This follows on from our Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development in 2020, and the achievement of becoming the first B Corp certified bed company in the UK in 2023.
Now in its 60th year, the King's Award is the UK’s most prestigious and coveted business accolade. It's awarded to a carefully selected cohort of organisations that have displayed outstanding performance and commitment to environmental and social stewardship.
For us, this award confirms that our founding approach of weaving sustainability into every decision and aspect of our business right from the start, has always been the correct one.

Where it all began
27 years ago, our founders Mark and Peter made the first 'natural mat' using coir and wool in a family boat shed on the banks of the river Exe in Devon, with a vision to combat the plethora of toxic, polyurethane foam that had become industry standard. Naturalmat became the first UK company to make a baby mattress using only natural fibres that passed British fire standards without any glues or chemicals.
Ever since, our mission has been clear: to help people sleep naturally healthier through our offering of natural fibre beds and mattresses. They have been thoughtfully designed to align with a responsible supply chain, sustainable manufacturing and robust, closed-loop end-of-life options.

Sustainable manufacturing
Every single element used in the manufacturing and packaging of our beds and mattresses has been consciously chosen for being either biodegradable, recyclable, renewable and certified organic wherever possible. Most importantly, we have eliminated the use of harmful chemicals usually necessary to pass the UK’s stringent fire regulations through a clever combination of natural and organic fibres.
Today we continue to handcraft each mattress and bed in our solar-powered Devon workshops, built in the same family boatyard where Naturalmat was born - although our setup has evolved a fair bit since!

Bed & Mattress for Life™
Millions of pieces of furniture end up in landfill every year, a terrible reality that never sat right with us. So we developed two closed-loop services to ensure that no Naturalmat bed or mattress contributes to this problem. Our Bed and Mattress for Life Initiatives™ give our customers 3 unique options at the end-of-life: Refurbish, Recycle or Donate.
We are the first and only bed company in the UK to offer such a service, and we've worked with our Impact Partners to recycle over 2,000 mattresses and 400 beds to date.

Waste not, want not
We've incorporated the principles of circularity throughout all our operations, from production to delivery, eliminating waste and excess at every step.
We use tailor-made reusable bags to deliver the vast majority of our beds and mattresses, which has helped us save over 6,000kg of single-use packaging.
All our wool offcuts are reprocessed into new wool pads for our mattresses, operating as a zero-waste system and our fabric offcuts are either reused or recycled through various circular initiatives.

Supporting our communities
We care about our team, our suppliers and everyone that helps make Naturalmat a company we’re proud of. We've been an accredited Real Living Wage Employer since 2021 to ensure all our team members are paid fairly and in line with rising living costs. We also offer a range of perks including a monthly organic fruit & veg box and a free mattress after 1 year at the company.
We source locally wherever possible: our website agency, printing company and delivery contractors are all South West-based. Our organic wool comes from certified farms in the south west, and we pay them at least a 30% premium over standard market rates.
We also work with our Impact Partners to donate new mattresses to vulnerable families within and beyond our local communities, volunteer at local beach cleans in Exmouth and run monthly healthy sleep workshops across our showrooms.
