Mattresses

All of our mattresses from Small Double and up can be made as One Piece or Zip & Link (which means the mattress is split in two and joined with a zip).

There are 3 advantages to choosing a Zip and Link mattress:

  • Large mattresses in one piece often won’t fit up the stairs or around tight corners, so by splitting the mattress in two, you’ll actually be able to get it into your bedroom!
  • Because they are filled with natural fibres, our mattresses are heavy (up to 150kg for a superking!) so turning and flipping a one piece mattress of this size is a real workout. Splitting the mattress in two makes this far easier.
  • Splitting your mattress also allows you to have different tensions on each side, perfect if you like a soft mattress, but your partner prefers something firmer.

The first point is the really key one – if a One Piece mattress simply won’t fit, you have to go for Zip & Link – and this is why checking access to your property is crucial.

Beds, Bases & Headboards

Similar logic applies to our bed bases – all bases from Small Double and up are split in two by default to make access easier. You can choose to keep your bed base whole, but in large sizes like superking these are very bulky, so you have to be certain they will fit.

Unlike mattresses, which have a bit of give and can sometimes be ‘squeezed’ around corners, bed bases are completely solid and allow no give! Similarly, headboards can be very large (especially for beds like the Halstock) so considering if these will fit is also important.

How To Check Access

If you’re thinking of choosing a One Piece mattress or bed base in a large size then please follow the steps below closely to check it will fit. If you’re going for a Zip & Link mattress or a Split Bed Base then access shouldn’t be an issue, but please follow the steps anyway just to double check.

Step 1.

Check the dimensions of the bed or mattress you’re ordering. Mattress sizes are below, and you’ll find bed dimensions on the individual product pages.

Mattress Size Dimensions Split? Split Dimensions (x2)
Small Single 75cm x 190cm N/A N/A

Step 2.

Identify and measure possible pinch points on the journey from the front door to your bedroom. Compare these measurements to the size of the items you are ordering to check whether they will fit. You do need a small gap between the bed/mattress and the walls or ceiling, otherwise you’ll risk causing damage to your home.

Doorways

For both the entrance doorway and internal doorways measure the width and height of the inside of the doorframe. Access doesn’t necessarily have to be via the front door if you have bigger doors elsewhere.

Stairways

Start by checking the width of your stairway at the narrowest point, not forgetting to account for handrails and light fixtures. Then measure the shortest distance from the bulkhead (A) to the nearest step (B). This distance (X) is often a pinchpoint so must be large enough to fit your bed/mattress through.

Hallways & tight corners

Measure the height and width of hallways, and check there is enough room to maneuver your bed/mattress around any tight corners.

Obstacles

Don’t forget to consider any obstacles like light fittings or radiators that may get in the way during delivery.
