Our pioneering way of ensuring your Naturalmat bed stands the test of time (and longer)

Most beds today are not built to last. They’re flimsily made, held together with staples and filled with synthetic foam which won’t biodegrade and is hard to recycle. As a result, millions of pieces of furniture are discarded in the UK each year, the majority of which end up in landfill.

At Naturalmat, we do things differently. Using traditional joinery techniques, we handcraft our beds with FSC® (C185003) certified timber, which is glued (using non toxic glue) and screwed together for a much sturdier, longer lasting construction, and upholster them in natural fibres such as organic wool, organic coconut fibre and recycled denim. When the time comes, each of these materials can be recycled or will biodegrade naturally.

The timber frames in our beds will last for many many years, but over time the upholstery fabric may fade or show signs of wear. You might also move house or redecorate, and fancy changing the fabric for something different.

That’s why we’ve launched our Bed for Life Initiative™, which offers three sustainable options when you’re thinking about replacing or refreshing your Naturalmat bed:

  • 1. Refurbish

    We'll collect your Naturalmat bed or headboard from your home and bring it back to our Devon workshop. There, our skilled team will take the upholstery fabric off and conduct a thorough quality check. Any highly compressed fillings will be replaced and we will finish it by putting on a brand new upholstery fabric of your choosing, giving it another long lease of life.

  • 2. Recycle

    If you would prefer not to refurbish your bed, we can recycle it for you through our partners TFR. With over 10 years of experience in bed and mattress recycling, they will ensure each component part goes to its respective recycling stream, rather than to landfill. You’ll receive a 10% discount towards your next purchase to account for the value of the materials recovered.

  • 3. Donate

    If your bed is clean and in fairly good condition we will take it back and donate it through our local charity network. It will either go directly to people in need, or be sold through charity shops to raise funds that support our communities.
