The Devon Oak Bed
Grown, matured & handcrafted in our home county of Devon.
Provenance and making locally have always been at the heart of Naturalmat. When we say ‘Made by hand in Devon’, we truly mean it. The newest addition to our collection of handmade beds – The Devon Oak Bed – couldn’t fit more perfectly into this mould.
Through our marine heritage, we have long been fascinated by how the timber we source evolves into the beds we make and it’s this link between nature and craft that we are so keen to restore in people’s minds. In the same way that shipwrights would comb the woodland to find branches with the right shape to fit the ribs and components of the boats they were building, we have identified the ancient Devon oak forests to source the timber we need to create the furniture of tomorrow.
The timber for the Devon Oak Bed comes from managed woodland on the banks of the River Tamar. On maturity, it is felled, planked and left to air dry naturally for 22 months just outside of South Molton (with our partners at UK Hardwoods). It is then crafted into its contemporary form by Bob at his workshop in Perridge.
The beauty of the grain running through the oak immediately catches the eye, whilst gentle radius corners round off the sleek, contemporary frame. Blending form with function, a slatted base provides the spring & ventilation every bed needs for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Very few beds are built the way we build them
Why Oak?
More resilient than faster-growing alternatives and effortlessly durable, English Oak has been the material of choice for hundreds of generations of craftspeople. Oak trees in Devon grow differently to those in warmer climates, producing more characterful timber and giving each bed its own individual story.
Our partners at UK Hardwoods (a family-run sawmill in North Devon) visit and inspect every single Oak before it is brought to their mill, ensuring that each tree has been responsibly grown within a sustainably-managed woodland. This means that every Devon Oak Bed is entirely traceable, all the way to the coppice it was sourced from on the banks of the River Tamar.
Local Provenance
We’re proud to say that the timber used in your Devon Oak bed has never left Devon. Until we deliver it to you, that is. When the wood arrives at the sawmill in North Devon it begins a delicate maturation process of no less than five years - taking it from felled tree to individual slabs ready for machining.
The felled trees are sorted and sawn by Tom, with nothing going to waste - a beam from the heartwood core, slabs from the sapwood exterior, and woodchip from the inner bark which is used to heat their seasoning kiln. Our oak slabs are then seasoned in a climate-controlled barn - the largest of its kind in the world - before they are planed and hand-selected by a member of our team, ready for machining.
Made in Devon
When it leaves the sawmill, our oak travels just 30 miles to a small workshop at the foot of the Blackdown Hills. Here, it is carefully machined into side rails, legs and cross-braces with the utmost precision. Next, these component parts are expertly married together to create the sleek, low-profile form of the Devon Oak Bed.
The last stop on the bed's journey is Bob's workshop - on the Perridge Estate just west of Exeter- where metal fixings are attached to the woodwork, which is then sanded and oiled ready for delivery.
