5 Deliciously Sustainable Devon Foodie Destinations
5 Delicious Foodie Destinations In Devon

When it comes to food we really are spoilt for choice in our home county of Devon. Our verdant countryside and abundant coastlines provide the most incredible local produce, and we are certainly not short of talented chefs to make the most of it.

Us Devonians are also no slouches when it comes to sustainability, with individuals and brands across the county pushing the limits of eco-friendly business.

We’ve gathered together 5 of our favourite sustainable purveyors of food and drink in Devon, all found within easy access of our HQ. If you are planning on visiting our Topsham showroom to find your perfect mattress, be sure to make a day of it by adding in a visit to one of these foodie havens.

Salutation Inn, Topsham

A 20 minute walk from our Topsham showroom, you will find our favourite local spot for an outstanding supper and stay, The Salutation Inn.

The Salutation Inn, Topsham - Devon Foodie Destination
Don't be fooled by it's (beautiful) architectural facade, The Salutation Inn is no longer a ‘pub’ and does not even have the modern convenience of a bar counter. The new philosophy of The Salutation Inn is to consistently serve the finest food in an unique atmosphere for all occasions.

With a focus on seasonal, local produce and ingredients, all their seafood is sourced from their sister Fishmongers & Deli, Salt, designed to provide the community with fresh fish and support the local fishermen.

Rockfish - Multiple locations

It doesn’t get more Devon than fish and chips, and they don’t get much better than at Rockfish, the seafood restaurant chain founded by top chef Mitch Tonks.

When Rockfish say ‘tomorrow’s fish are still in the sea’ they really mean it - every day their expert team select the best fish directly from the fleet in Brixham and from the most sustainable fisheries in the world.

When it comes to their sustainability credentials, we love their recent ‘For the Love of Cod’ initiative. They’ve paused selling cod in their restaurants this summer in favour of more sustainable but lesser consumed British fish - bold, innovative and right up our street.
With 8 restaurants across Devon, you are never too far from Rockfish’s famous fish and chips - their Exeter and Exmouth locations are both just 15 minutes from our base in Topsham.

The Bull Inn - Totnes

We have waxed lyrical about the award winning Bull Inn on many occasions, but that certainly wont stop us pointing you in their direction once again.

This organic, ethical pub with rooms ticks all of our boxes, combining a seasonal organic menu, a carefully considered bar, and nine consciously-designed rooms.

After enjoying an incredible supper inspired by their ‘Nine No-Bull Rules to Dine By’ you can retire to your room for a fantastic night’s sleep on one of our hand made pocket sprung mattresses - The Superb
The Bull Inn is situated in the picturesque South Hams town of Totnes, just a 40 minute drive south from the Naturalmat workshop and showroom.

The River Cottage - Axminster

Chef, writer and broadcaster Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is known for his uncompromising commitment to seasonal, ethically produced food and his concern for the environment. His iconic River Cottage HQ was once based in Dorset, but can now be found in East Devon just outside of Axminster.

There are a multitude of reasons to make a pilgrimage to the headquarters behind the Channel 4 series and legendary cookbooks. From hedgerow foraging courses to the River Cottage cookery school, there are plenty of opportunities to expand your culinary horizons.

Hard to beat however are their seven course River Cottage Feasts, where you can enjoy the very best local and seasonal produce, prepared by their talented chefs. Stay the night at River Cottage and you can sleep off all seven courses on a - you guessed it - Naturalmat Superb mattress.

They are certainly off the beaten track, so follow the instructions on their website - a journey of about 40 minutes from the Naturalmat workshop.

Riverford Organic Farmers - Buckfastleigh

30 years ago one man and his wheelbarrow, Guy Singh-Watson, began farming and selling Devon’s finest organic veg. Today his Riverford Organic Farmers vegetable boxes are delivered to around 90,000 homes across the UK.

As a certified B Corp, Riverford is run at the forefront of ethical business. From their employee ownership scheme, to their innovative eco-packaging, they’ve been both talking the talk and walking the walk when it comes to sustainability for many many years.

They don’t only deliver their fantastic organic veg in boxes (which our team here at Naturalmat enjoy every month). Take a 40 minute excursion from Topsham and you can visit the Riverford HQ and its award winning Field Kitchen. They offer a set menu in beautiful surroundings, leisurely served as if attending a (very special) family meal. Always a truly memorable experience.
