Winter/Spring Devon Getaway Guide

Winter/Spring Devon Getaway Guide

By now, the charm of winter may be wearing thin, and many of us find ourselves eagerly daydreaming about summer. But before we skip ahead, it’s worth remembering that every season has its own unique delights—and here in Devon, we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of them right on our doorstep.

To help you shake off those winter blues, and enjoy the cold as much as you can, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite places to stay in Devon, perfect for a little staycation or a full reset away from home. To make sure you come back perfectly well-rested, all these destinations feature our natural mattresses.

Glebe House

Glebe is a guest house, restaurant and 15-acre smallholding in the heart of East Devon. It follows the Italian concept of ‘agroturismo’; working farms with accommodation and restaurants showcasing artisan products from that particular farm. A unique foodie retreat in the beautiful English countryside, Glebe is the perfect place to stay at in the colder months—you don’t even need to leave the property!

Glebe features a vegetable garden with a polytunnel, cutting gardens, an on-site bakery and temperature controlled ageing room for salumi production. This means that, in addition to providing gorgeous rooms which feature our mattresses, they also have an amazing farm-to-table restaurant which serves absolutely astonishing local food. Inspired by their time in Italy, Glebe have combined artisan techniques with nose-to-tail cooking and Devon-based seasonality to offer an ever-changing menu - all set in a jaw-dropping backdrop of Devonshire hills.

What to do

Only 3 miles down the road is the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site with its terracotta and cream colored cliffs that give way to remote under-cliff beaches on a long untamed coastline. From here you can take a picnic and explore sections of the famous South West Coastal Path. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a boat out and try mackerel fishing or snorkel low reefs and rock pools to see crabs and starfish off picturesque fishing villages Beer and Branscombe.

Inland, roam through the ancient woodlands and marvel at medieval hill-forts. Find the largest tree in the southwest in Shute woods and explore majestic forests in the Iron Age hillfort Blackbury Camp.

On a rainy day, have a potter around the seaside town of Lyme Regis, with excellent restaurants, galleries and independent craft shops to while away an afternoon.

The Bull Inn

Nestled at the top of Totnes high street & overlooking Rotherfold square, The Bull Inn is an organic, ethical pub and hotel. Open seven days a week from 8am until late, they serve supplier-led, seasonal breakfasts, lunch and dinner as well as nine beautiful rooms and a self-catering apartment available to stay in.

Their interiors are thought through and environmentally conscious, with every decision they make scrutinised for its environmental impact. To create their rooms, they worked with reclaimed furniture, reworked vintage fabrics and collections of antique market finds. They’re sustainable right down to their mattresses, which are handcrafted for them by us.

The Bull Inn is also an organic, ethical pub where they take full advantage of being surrounded by some of the best organic food producers in the UK. Their operations are governed by their ‘No Bull Rules’, resulting in menus featuring organic beer, wine and food. At The Bull you will find veg-first meals complimented by meat, using whole animals and thought-through fish dishes, including legal by-catch.

What to do

Totnes is a thriving market town with a lively independent shop and cafe scene, meaning you won’t have to go far from the Bull to find great things to do. On top of all the lovely shops, bars and restaurants in town, there are a number of beautiful walks to do, for those who don’t mind a bit of outdoors in the colder months. For those not wishing to brave the often unforgiving English weather, there are also many classes and workshops you can get involved in to fully immerse yourself in Totnes’ well-known creative scene.

Wilderhus Glamping
Wilderhus Glamping

Wilderhus offers three unique tiny homes, all of which are based in South Devon and have their own particular charm. Each of these eccentric spaces comes with a Scandinavian-style wood-fired hot tub, and our Mohair & Lambswool Mattresses. The original hand-built Shepherd’s Hut comes with its own separate treehouse and stargazing platform. Wilderhus also offers a second Shepherd’s Hut, based on the fairytale ideal of a forest hideaway. Their Vintage American Airstream is gutted and redesigned to maximise light and space, with plants climbing the walls to bring nature inside. Best of all, they’re fully committed to mindful, sustainable tourism, evidenced by the presence of our mattresses in their cosy spaces.

The Wilderhus vision is to offer an off-grid time-off experience in unique settings giving you a chance to reconnect with nature and rejoice in simple pleasures, something that is usually missed as the colder months go on. It’s the perfect opportunity to recharge and retreat in beautiful surroundings, away from the demands of a busy life and multiple screens!

What to do

Wilderhus is the ideal base to explore south Devon. Firstly, Ashburton is only two miles from this glamping site. Ashburton is a charming town filled with fine food shops, restaurants, cafes, and other boutique style shops. It’s also home to the Ashburton Cookery School, rated among the top 5 in the UK. We highly recommend visiting Emilia and Le Vin Perdu, sister restaurants which are big highlights to the Devon culinary scene.

Further afield, Totnes (the original Transition Town) is just 10 miles away. It has a train station, a castle, and a popular weekly market with a bohemian vibe. It also features many alternative shops, a wide range of excellent cafes and an impressive array of health care practices.

For those who love the outdoors, Dartmoor is just north of Ashburton. With its neolithic stone circles, wild ponies, lakes, rivers, cycle and hiking trails, it provides endless opportunity for exploration, as well as several character pubs.
